“Jacob loved Joseph more than any of his other children” (v. 3). One day Jacob bought his favorite son a spectacular multi-colored robe as a sign of his special affection. That gift created tension in the family. Also, Joseph would report to his father the bad things his brothers did. Favoritism mixed with naivety led to hatred. “His brothers hated Joseph because their father loved him more than the rest of them. They could not say a kind word to him” (v. 4). That means his brothers bullied and verbally abused Joseph which led to even more tension. Then Joseph had dreams that suggested he would one day rule over his brothers and whole family, and he told everyone about those dreams. Unequal parental love led to jealousy and hatred. And hatred led to despicable behavior.
Sometimes hatred can become birthed within us. If we don’t get it out and deal with it, we likely will do something we will regret. Forgive those who created environments where favoritism stirred jealousy or even hatred within you. And admit any hatred you sense within you—toward anyone—and ask God to remove it and give your heart peace.
