Jacob and Esau grew up with parents who had “favorites”. Dad favored Esau. Mom favored Jacob. Tension developed. Jacob extorted his brother to get his rights as the firstborn. In their culture, that meant Jacob got a double portion of the inheritance. Esau in turn made a foolish, hasty decision. Then Jacob conspired with his mother to steal his father’s blessing of the firstborn. Hatred ensued. Esau hated Jacob so much he planned to kill him (27:41). So Jacob fled his home and family for 20 years. When God called Jacob to return home, Jacob feared that Esau still hated him (32:11). So Jacob prayed for peace. He also tried to show his humility and love for Esau. He sent Esau generous gifts “to ensure friendship” (v. 8). And Jacob bowed on the ground before Esau 7 times, showing his humility. And when the brothers finally saw each other, “Esau ran to meet Jacob and embraced him, threw his arms around his neck and kissed him. They both wept together” (v. 4). Both of them had changes of heart since they had last seen each other.
Sometimes siblings don’t always treat each other well growing up. But it is best to make peace with family if it is possible. Don’t be the sibling or child or parent who holds a grudge. Let the God of peace change your heart so you can make peace.
