Genesis 3 Hiding from God

The first people only had one commandment. A serpent (apparently used by Satan to tempt people) questioned whether people would really face any consequences if they broke the one commandment: “You won’t die!” (v. 4). The serpent also convinced them that the one commandment kept something good from them. If they would just break the commandment, their lives would get better: “God knows your eyes will be opened and you will be like God” (v. 5). When the first people broke the first commandment, their lives did not get better. They felt shame and they faced pain.

But I want to focus on how they responded once they sinned, and how God responded. They hid from God due to shame. God sought them out, even though they had sinned. There were consequences for their sin. But God postponed some of the consequences. He also provided animal skins to cover themselves to relieve their feelings of shame. This became the first time another living being died to cover human sin and shame. God sought people out when they hid. And God provided release from their shame. Praise God who seeks to cover our sin and shame.
